Rock Pigeons vs Doves

Rock pigeons and doves are closely related and belong to the same family, Columbidae, but they are not the same bird species. While there is some overlap and variation within the family, there are a few general differences between rock pigeons (Columba livia) and doves:

1. Size: Rock pigeons are generally larger than doves. Pigeons can range from 12 to 14 inches (30 to 36 cm) in length, whereas doves are typically smaller, measuring around 9 to 13 inches (23 to 33 cm) in length.

2. Appearance: Rock pigeons typically have a plump and robust appearance with a relatively larger head and a rounded body. They often have a variety of color patterns, including gray, brown, white, or a mix of these colors. Doves, on the other hand, tend to have a slimmer and more streamlined body shape. Some dove species, such as the mourning dove, have a pointed tail.

3. Habitat: Rock pigeons are highly adaptable and are commonly found in urban areas, roosting on buildings and ledges. They have successfully colonized cities worldwide. Doves, on the other hand, tend to prefer a wider range of habitats, including forests, woodlands, and open grasslands. Some dove species are migratory and cover long distances during their seasonal movements.

4. Behavior: Rock pigeons are known for their gregarious nature and often form large flocks. They are social birds and tend to gather in groups. Doves can also be social but are often seen in smaller flocks or pairs. Some doves, like the mourning dove, are known for their distinctive mournful cooing sound.

5. Reproduction: Pigeons and doves have similar breeding habits, but there may be slight differences. Rock pigeons tend to build flimsy nests made of twigs, while doves often construct more substantial nests using twigs and other materials. Doves generally lay one or two eggs per clutch, while rock pigeons may lay one or two eggs as well but can also have larger clutches.

It's important to note that pigeon and dove species vary significantly, and some doves, like the common ground dove, may have a similar appearance and behavior to pigeons. The categorization of birds as pigeons or doves can sometimes be subjective and may vary depending on regional or cultural distinctions.
